Be a volunteer

We need you.

Could you help?

Over 200 volunteers deliver a staggering 35,000 hours of voluntary hours each year, representing a benefit in kind wage saving of £500,000.

The People’s Kitchen has transformed thousands of lives, but this work would be impossible without charity’s volunteers. Our team are like a large family, all working towards a common goal – to grow, collect, prepare and serve some 40,000 hot meals per year. We are in need of a number of specific roles at the moment, please take a look.

Simply the best

The sterling work of our volunteers even received Royal recognition in 2014. The charity was bestowed with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service – an annual award given to groups in the voluntary sector in the UK. This award is the equivalent to an MBE – that’s how spectacular our team is – and is the highest award given to a voluntary group. So could you help?

  • Warehouse

It all starts in the warehouse, where our volunteers receive goods, sort food, receive menus, and load the cages to deliver to the Alison Centre.

  • Allotment

It’s important for us to provide fresh and healthy meals, and our team of allotment volunteers help us to grow fresh produce for the kitchen.

  • Drivers

Our drivers collect food from local businesses, churches, and community donations, undertake bulk shopping, and wash and maintain our vans.

  • Welfare

Welfare co-ordinators, Your Future, Chaplaincy, Medical Centre staff, all made up of volunteers who offer support for Friends and provide vital information.

  • Cleaners

It’s essential to keep the kitchen and our dining area sparkling clean, and our cleaners help us to do that.

  • Team Leaders

Our team leaders oversee staff and rotas, food hygiene, food temperature checklists, health and safety, order equipment, and liaise with the warehouse and outside agencies when necessary.

  • Support

There’s a full range of supporting roles, including our teams of Trustees, Recruitment, Fundraising, Treasury, Admin, PR/Media, IT, Website, Training, Transport, Speakers, and Health and Safety.

  • Outreach

Monday and Thursday crews prepare food and clothing, and go out and deliver friendship and food from the vans.

  • Events

Our event volunteers bring Friends together for social activities, including music nights, bowling, day trips, the Rambling Club, Camera Club, cards and crafts evenings, and Christmas celebrations.

  • In-house Friendship & Food

Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday crews deliver friendship and food from the Alison Centre.

  • Food Preperation

Our team of cooks help prepare soup and meals for outreach and in-house teams.

Volunteering at The People’s Kitchen gives me an immense sense of pleasure, and it is always a great feeling going to bed at night knowing that you have contributed, even in a very small way, to making the world a better place.
