On Wednesday 5th October, People’s Kitchen volunteer Peter Samuel, and members of the public braved the Autumn weather to fundraise for homeless projects in the North East and national charity CEO Sleepout UK.

Some of the North East’s top business leaders and entrepreneurs joined Peter to sleep under the stars and raise awareness of the plight those sleeping rough face.

The event raised much needed funds for a number of charities including The People’s Kitchen and national homeless charity CEO Sleepout.

Following the event Peter said ‘Sleeping out was not an experience I would want to repeat in a hurry. The next day felt like jetlag. Whilst I am sure one could adapt if forced to, my wholehearted sympathy goes out to those of our friends who find themselves in this situation. The lack of washing facilities under the same roof as one sleeps in is a major disadvantage and although I was in a secure environment for the night, I still felt exposed and vulnerable. This must be so much worse if forced to sleep out in the streets of a city. The only consolation was the sight of some wonderful starry skies.’

Peter raised more than £1000 in sponsorship for the People’s Kitchen. You can still donate via Peter’s dedicated JustGiving site here.

The event was organised by The Alnwick Garden Trust and the CEO Sleepout.
